How the story began

Rance’s background in theatre prepared him to tell a great story. When he entered the corporate world and saw a need for a more humanized way of communicating, he developed a method to help professionals lead better, sell better, train better.

Rance is an instructional designer himself, with a special commitment to invest in his fellow designers. He founded the School of Story Design, an online school for instructional designers who want to train with stories. His courses are practical and equip designers with skills they can immediately use.

He also conducts workshops to help professionals discover and deliver the best stories for their audience.

Finding the right story

Shaping a story that resonates is like striking gold. And nothing makes an instructional designer happier than seeing their story take shape in the form of a storyboard that’s turned into a slide show, a podcast or a video. And let’s face it – the video is top of the game, what we shoot for if the budget allows.

Vyond is great value for money when it comes to video creation. But there’s more to Vyond than affordability.

Why Rance loves Vyond

For Rance, Vyond offers a way to realize stories. He was initially attracted to Vyond over a decade ago because of the camera movement abilities that put him in the director’s chair. Characters can be customized for any viewing audience. It’s a very flexible tool and as Rance says, “There’s always a way with Vyond to help your viewing audience see what they need to see.”

Without much experience and with a limited budget, you can still create a simple explainer video in Vyond. Move on to incorporate more advanced features and you’re soon telling a character-driven story!

In his practical workshops, Rance gives his students a video project to produce. In the more advanced courses, students are challenged to storyboard and write a script, using Rance’s Story Design production principles. Everyone receives detailed feedback.

Examples of features covered:
  • Text motion graphics.
  • Masking and cropping techniques.
  • Motion paths for entrances, exits and movements.
  • Advanced camera movement and positioning.
  • Customized backgrounds and efficient handling of assets.
Checking in with Rance

While wrapping up this article that tries to capture a whole area of practice, we turned to Rance Greene and asked: What have we missed? Anything you’d like to add?

“Stories are the language of people. As designers, we can speak that language fluently. Instructional Story Design is the process. Vyond is the tool. Let’s produce some great stories!”

Take the chance to meet Rance in Berlin on 16 April – at Masters of Vyond.
