Why is learning essential for business and organisations?

Most employees state the opportunity to develop new competencies as the most important thing at a workplace. Two of the top five factors for people when considering a new job are ‘opportunities for career growth within the company’ and ‘opportunities to learn and develop new skills’. Work is not just about having security and paying the bills. Work is a place where we develop, grow – and learn.

Why focus more on learning?

Upskilling makes employees more motivated and help them stay in the organization. People who participate in online or in-person learning activities grows and advance - and they can easier adapt during times of change.

New times, new skills

Have you ever heard of the term VUCA? It stands for volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous – in other words, a description of our modern, fast-paced world. Our times are characterised by uncertainty, all the way from the market conditions to our private lives. So, how do people and businesses manage a VUCA world? The short answer is: by adapting and learning how to adapt.

Upskilling and reskilling

But how do we create space for learning in a world that moves fast? Digitalising learning is one of the answers. In a previous newsletter, we wrote about learning in the flow of work and others are talking about Learning Agility. Digital learning offers an opportunity to learn and acquire new skills in the midst of other things. Today, it’s never been easier to offer employees relevant training tailormade to their needs, giving them what they need, when they need it.

Learning is growing

Once upon a time you probably enjoyed playing and learning just for the experience itself – the simple thrill of discovering something new and acquiring a new skill. Learning holds great value just by itself, but it also has an accumulative effect that spreads throughout relations and organisations. It benefits both the employees as well as the growth of the overall organization.
